More than 3 million consumers are using broadband Internet connections that cost more than $100 a month, according to a new study that found that the average cost of Internet service is far more than what consumers pay for other Internet services.
The study, conducted by research firm Technomic, found that about 2.7 million U.S. consumers pay $85 or more a month for Internet service.
Of those, nearly 2.4 million pay more than twice that amount and more than 3.3 million pay $100 or more per month.
The average monthly bill for an Internet connection in the United States was $100, the study found.
Technomic used data from broadband providers’ websites to compile data on monthly bills for Internet connections.
The report found that in 2018, Internet users in the U.K. had the most Internet bills per person, while users in Canada, Australia and Germany had the least.
In the United Kingdom, the average monthly Internet bill for a single customer was $3.10.
That figure increased to $5.70 in 2019, $6.20 in 2020 and $7.10 in 2021.
For a household of three Internet users, the price jumped to $11.70.
In 2019, in Australia, Internet service providers charged an average monthly price of $5,872.
This rose to $7,619 in 2020.
For each of the next three years, the annual increase was $9,946, the report found.
The cost of broadband is increasingly being driven by the increasing number of people living in households that pay more for Internet services, said Steve Schoonover, Technomic’s CEO.
“We’re seeing the most extreme pricing in the past two to three years,” Schoonoff said.
“That means there are more and more households that are paying more for the same service.”
Schoonover said that, overall, consumers in the states of the United Sates paid the most for Internet in 2019 and 2020.
The most expensive Internet service in the country, the University of California’s Internet price index, was $21.95 a month.
In 2020, that index topped $25.
That was the highest since 2005, when the index topped out at $19.93.
The price of fiber optic broadband, the most common form of Internet access, increased in 2019 to $20.79 a month in the San Francisco Bay Area, the San Jose, California, area and Los Angeles, California.
